Frederick W. Padgett, 77, a native of Fort Scott, died Jan. 16 at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was the son of the late Hon. W. W. Padgett and Laura A. Padgett, born Oct. 10, 1888, at Fort Scott. A widely known scientist and petroleum engineer, Mr. Padgett attended the University of Kansas and later received his BS and MS degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, Pa. He spent five years as a researcher at the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, specializing in petroleum and natural gas. Later he was professor of petroleum engineering at the University of Oklahoma at Norman. He went into industry in the mid 1930's and resided in New Jersey, prior to moving to Florida around 1951. When he moved east he became director of the wax research department, Moore and Munger, New York City, a firm of wax specialists. He was the author of numerous books and papers on technical subjects. Mr. Padgett was a member of the American Chemical Society, as well as many fraternities including Phi Kappa Psi, Alpha Phi Sigma, Sigma Gamma Epsilon and Sigma Chi. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Patterson Padgett, formerly of Mercer, Pa.: two sons, Edward D. of Morristown, N.J., and John W. of Morristown, N.J.; two daughters, Mrs. Lindsay Biathrow or Arlington, Mass., and Mrs. Sherman Van Esselstyn, Morris Plains, N.J.; and seven grandchildren. Services were held in Basking Ridge, N.J., Jan. 20, with interment at St. Bernards Cemetery, Bernards Township, Bernardsville, N.J. 42
